Way to spoil it. July 19, 2007 ~ 9:54 am
Posted by Julie in : Rants , trackbackSome complete git over at the NY Times got a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows early (some bookstore is gonna get in major-league trouble over this) and reviewed it. Complete with spoilers. I didn’t read it, but I’m a little irritated. I should not have to completely shut myself off from the media and the internet from now until I finish the book or run the risk of having all the fun taken out of my reading experience. It’s Harry Potter, for fuck’s sake, I don’t need the Cliff’s Notes version - I will be more than happy to read it myself as soon as I’m able to do so.
People who spoil books and movies for others? They’re the same kind of people who would kick a puppy for fun. Bastards.

That’s dirty. I hope he gets mauled by a gang of pissed off tweens.
I hope he gets mauled by Grawp. On a bad day. And then Firenze and the other centaurs can have a go at him.
What’s wrong with kicking puppies for fun?
Not that I would publish the spoilers or anything, I’m just saying, you know?
On the other hand, I would never have watched the movie “The Others” if my daughter had not told me about the twist. But yeah, that’s crappy. I went to see “The Sixth Sense” opening weekend because I knew it had a good twist and wanted to experience it myself, unlike “The Crying Game.” I waited too long and knew all about it before I saw it. Have fun with your weekend read!
There’s always a killjoy, eh?
Vince~Oh, I see. You’re not a spoiler, just a puppy kicker.
Geewits~That twist in The Others was fantastic, wasn’t it? Did not see it coming. Of course, I was mostly focused on Chris Eccleston.
Lisa~Exactly.
Somebody at the Post-Gazette said it perfectly “There should be a special spot reserved in the Deathly Hallows for anyone who ruins the ending of Harry Potter.” Huzzah.
See, and since I will most likely never read the book, I want to know the ending! So feel free to email me when you’re done reading and tell me who she offed.
Off to my neighborhood B&N to get in line for “that” book. The eldest 2 are diehards ( as is their mom, truth be told!)
May “He-that-should-not-be-named” get his ass fried by HP and friends in the end.
The other options don’t bear thinking about.
Oh, and there is a special place for those who leak books ahead of time. And it’s not pretty. And it comes with a humongous ugly guy named “bubba” that likes little creeps. Yupyupyup- Times 3!
We put a 2-week ban on spoilers on the game server I Admin for–instant mute for anyone who runs their mouth. I’ll be mad as hell if I have reason to enforce that one, since I’ll have to read the damn spoiler to make sure it’s a reason to mute someone.
I tripped across a couple spoilers and then determined they may not be spoilers, but they were spoilers but still didn’t ruin the experience for me. There were still a great deal of surprises and other things that I had already smugly guessed. I’m bad that way. I’m starting the re-read.
Wow, you got linkage all over the place! In two posts from our favorite Cajun dude
Also… I think back to Star Wars and the fact we already knew that Anakin Skywalker was going to become Darth Vader. We already knew that Padme was going to die. What made it interesting was how and when and why, the same with HP. Although I think it’s heinous to ruin it for other people, I guess when you look at it along the Star Wars sage vein, just knowing how it ends does not spoil how you get there.
Nanner~Yeah, but going into that final book, you’re not sure how it ends. You know the prophecy, but that prophecy is open to any number of interpretations. It’s not quite the same as knowing for certain that Anakin is Darth Vader.
Lisa~I loves me the linkage.
Nanner (again)~Will start the re-read at the end of the month when I’m done with scripts. This was my promise to myself - I could take a break out of the script reading to get through DH, and then it was nose to the grindstone to the end of the month. I can’t wait until I can re-read it, though.
Pand0ra~That is kind of a shit job to have when you haven’t read it yet. Hope you got through it quickly and had no reason to enforce the ban!
KC~Hope you guys liked it as much as the Oldest and I did!
KtP~All you non-Harry fans are asking me for the ending, you’re the third person! What’s up with that?
Kimmi-san~May they never reach King’s Cross.
