It’s in the Wikipedia! February 29, 2008 ~ 9:59 am

Sometimes I wish I didn’t have a day job that tired me out so that I want to be in bed by midnight. Because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have had to stifle yawns during the funniest two hours of my life last night. The yawns were all a reflection on Some College during Commencement Season and in no way a commentary on Eddie Izzard, who was going completely insane on stage in front of me.

I have loved Eddie Izzard since I caught “Dress to Kill” on BBC America a couple of years ago (to be fair, I only caught it after Aimee and ESC told me I couldn’t go on in life without seeing it), and when I saw he was playing in New York, I was on that like white on rice. I bought a ticket immediately (of course without reading the details) and found myself with a ticket to last night’s 10:30 show. Because they’re all 10:30 shows. And thus I was dead tired at 12:15 this morning, but still laughing until I cried at Eddie’s encore.

For the record, he was an off-duty transvestite last night, in a blazer and jeans and no makeup, but he was still awesome. And yes, his eyes are really that blue. In what is par for the course with Eddie, I can’t describe the part of the routine that made me laugh hardest because it was about giraffes and how they can’t communicate verbally and it involved a lot of pantomime. Giraffes playing charades to tell the others in the herd about lurking tigers made the tears run down my face. There were a lot of Bible jokes, including my favorite, “The Good Samaritan.” Because calling him the good Samaritan makes it sound like “all the other Samaritans were assholes.” Eddie also does a bit with his iPhone about looking information up on the Wikipedia, because everything is there (it’s true, I tell people this all the time) and another bit about how dinosaurs don’t appear in the Bible, because Creationism doesn’t make sense, because if God made dinosaurs he was smoking crack.

I think it just defies description, but it was amazing and I want to try to see it again before the run is over on March 8. Maybe next Friday. And I’ll take a nap before.

You have just opened my eyes to a whole world of hysteria that I didn’t even know existed! So THAT’S who people make all those icons of on LJ! My hubby is a huge Star Wars fan, I’ll be showing him the Death Star Canteen clip on youtube (done in Legos) when he gets home. :)

Thank you for introducing me to Eddie Izzard, youtube has had me laughing for half an hour already!

6. Vince - February 29, 2008

Sounds like a good time. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

Vince~Enjoyed myself is putting it lightly. :)

Aimee~Took today off to wait for the laptop…mostly to recover from my late night. I got home last night at 1:30!

Tina~Eddie fans have a whole group over on Ravelry, too. “Covered in Bees” And if YouTube has it, you need to check out the “Cake Or Death” bit as well as monkeys and Charlton Heston. Those are my favorites.

Grace~I only wish I could have met him. That would have made it perfect, but it was too freakin’ cold last night! Even Eddie commented on it!

8. Seamus - February 29, 2008

I would love to see his show - he just cracks me up!!!

9. evilsciencechick - February 29, 2008

jellussssssssssssssssssssssss!

were they evil giraffes? I know he does a bit about evil giraffes, eating all the food so there’s none for the other animals.

10. Aimee - February 29, 2008

Giraffes… I can just see him loping across the stage, doing the giraffe eating mime.

Gah–I’m turning inside out I’m so envious!!!

11. The Fashion Diva - February 29, 2008

Isn’t Eddie just the best? I remember watching him on tv a couple of times and the man had me laughing so hard I was in tears.

I’m totally jealous as hell of you!

Seamus~As funny as he is on TV? He’s even funnier in person.

ESC~No evil giraffes this time, only evil ducks. But the giraffes were trying to tell each other that there were tigers stalking them and since they can’t make any noise, there was much pantomiming of “Tie” and then “Sounds like…grrr.” And then they all looked at each other and screamed in horror, except since they can’t make any noise…hysterical.

Aimee~The imitation of a triceratops was even better. ;)

FD~The one that always gets me on his specials is “Give me a fucking banana” with the chimps doing sign language. Love it.
