Spring cleaning May 14, 2008 ~ 11:09 am

I have many things that I want to be doing right now, and just not enough time. For instance, I want to take a photography class. I have a great camera, and I get good shots, but I think a lot of that is due to sheer luck. Couldn’t replicate that shit if I tried because I just don’t know how. I need to really understand how my camera works to be able to get the most out of it.

I also want to tweak the blog. I’m not happy with the way it looks, especially with my Ravelry progress bars. I could make the whole thing nicer if I knew where to start, but I’m way back on 1998 HTML knowledge, and the internets has moved beyond me. I need to figure out what freakin’ system I should learn to do the tweakage (is it CSS that I should be learning? or XML? or what?), buy a couple of books, and learn. Just like I did back in 1998 when I had an actual website. Of course, back in 1998 I also had a day job in the middle of nowhere and didn’t have any friends or family around to talk to. I lived on the computer because of that.

I need a spring cleaning of the website. And I need a spring cleaning of the mind. Get rid of all the stressful stuff, look into things that will get my mind back into good shape. It’s that time of year, after all.

Julie,

I think your web site looks fine. If you just want a new look, have you thought about tweaking your WordPress theme? You can do that with CSS and a little bit of PHP. I recommend Eric Meyer’s CSS: The Definitive Guide to learn CSS, but I haven’t used a PHP book in so long I don’t even know which one to recommend anymore. The WordPress Codex (http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page) is great for learning how to work with WP, too. It’s really a lot of fun to play around with themes. I bet you’d enjoy it.

Of course, I haven’t worked with WP since I left my job two years ago, so everything might have changed completely since then and you might totally hate it. So might I. :-)

I know what you mean about the website upgrade. Of course, I took the easy way out and had Se7en (http://evil-se7en.com/) do it for me for a nominal fee. Looks great and someone else did the work.

You gotta pick your battles sometimes, ya know?

Vintage Reader~I’ve surfed around looking for a theme I like, but this is as close as it gets. I’m going to have to figure out how to do major tweakage on the site to make it work the way I want it to, so your recommendations are very helpful - thanks! I enjoyed the behind the scenes of a website back in 1998, so I think I will again when I can get it all through my thick skull. :)

Vince~Seven does do a spectacular job. That’s a possibility as well, thanks for reminding me that he does that!
