I recommend Eric Meyer's CSS: The Definitive Guide to learn CSS, but I haven't used a PHP book in so long I don't even know which one to recommend anymore. The WordPress Codex (http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page) is great for learning how to work with WP, too. It's really a lot of fun to play around with themes. I bet you'd enjoy it.
