Brooklyn Botanical Garden
This morning, after having a conversation with my mom that again involved the phrase “Yeah, I puked last night,” I had a revelation. I should not be puking every couple of weeks. I’m betting I shouldn’t even be puking every couple of months. It’s not normal for a stomach to be so sensitive, and I surely can’t be eating bad food that often (really, I’m generally not as stupid as I was with the pork loin last month).
This revelation led to another revelation: maybe it’s some sort of food allergy. When I was little, I was tested for allergies and they found me allergic to everything in the universe except cinnamon, coffee, and kapoc. I thought I had outgrown them, but maybe I haven’t. My friend Kim has all sorts of random allergies (which were eventually diagnosed as celiac disease), maybe I’ve got something similar going on that explains the puking and the gnawing ulcer-like feeling that’s apparently not an ulcer but merely hyperacidity.
To prove my theory, I need to start listing things I’ve eaten when I get sick and see if there’s any overlap in foods or ingredients. It’s just a shame I don’t know what the hell was in the pint of sour Belgian ale the beer distributor bought me at the bar last night. And here I was all excited because I didn’t have to buy a beer at Stitch n Bitch. Win some, lose some, I guess.

What kind of place is Stitch n Bitch?
Retro~Stitch n Bitch is my Wednesday night knitting group - we call it that to sound cool. We also meet in a bar to look cool (we were at The Gate in Park Slope). We seem to have achieved notoriety because people walk past us and say “Oh, a Stitch n Bitch” while nodding knowingly.
Oh, come on…free beer? Suck it up, beyotch.
I’ve probably been to a Stitch n Bitch before. I used to live about a hundred feet from the Gate, and went there pretty much nightly with my roommate. If the Replacements were playing on the jukebox, I was there.
Retro~If it’s summer, we’re at the Gate. If it’s winter, we’re at Loki a few blocks down towards Flatbush.
Lori~Free BELGIAN beer. Which meant I got a $7.50 glass o’ beer for FREE.
I agree with Lori, food allergy or no, free beer is free beer. Especially free EXPENSIVE Belgian beer.
You should definately figure out what’s causing the stomach issues. I haven’t puked since I was like 15, even when I was in the 60 foot seas in the North Atlantic. It ain’t right to get sick that often.
Oh, and thanks for the words of encouragement for Maverick!
Vince~My aunt once referred to me as “the pukingest kid I’ve ever seen,” so I’ve been this way since I was a kid. I don’t remember it being so often though…
And anytime Maverick needs a cheering section, you know where to look.
This so didn’t go where I thought a puking story would lead.
Thank everyone for that, eh?
LOVE those flowers!
yikes.
it took me over 20 YEARS to figure out I’m allergic to bivalves. i don’t get sick until 2 or 3 hours after I’ve eaten them. But still…
you didn’t have scallops for dinner that night, did you?
The whole blogsphere is making me laugh today. “Pukingest kid I’ve ever seen” cracked me UP. I let loose a Ricky Gervais laugh on that one.
I wanna see the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Oh, and how close are you to Coney Island? I’ll buy you a non-barfing beer if you take me to cool places when I come to your house in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS FROM NOW!

Yikes, be sure and take care of you. I hope the puking thing goes away SOON!
For some reason my bowels have developed a severe dislike of egg nog. I feel your pain.
It’s been a “No Julie Friday”, and frankly it sucks.
Aimee~First Friday off, sweetie. We were at the beach!!
Nanner~No part of my body likes eggnog. I understand completely.
Lisa~That makes two of us - this is just getting old.
Aimee (again)~ We can definitely do Coney, and should probably do it on the Friday. They have fireworks Friday nights! We could do the Botannical Garden in the morning, then chill at my house for a while (if it’s way hot) then hit Coney.
Tot~I think she said that after I hurled spaghetti in my cousin’s room. At 2 AM.
Bunsen~Nope, no bivalves. Now what the hell was in the sour beer, that’s what I want to know!
Esther~The Gardens are gorgeous…I took *so* many pictures there!
KtP~Well, thank heaven it didn’t go the one place you would really expect a puking story told by a woman to go, yeah?
I thought of you the other day.
At Borders they have a book out called “Stitch N Bitch”. I didn’t flip through it as I was stuck in line, but if you’re curious what it’s about, try doing a search online or stop by your local Borders store and check it out.
Good luck with figuring out the food allergy thing. My son was recently diagnosed with being allergic to a long list of things including soy. The list of what doesn’t comtain soybean oil is considerably smaller than the one that does unfortunately.
Stacy~I have that book - it’s great! Good luck with finding things that don’t contain soy…that sucks.
