Rick and the girls have been playing around with Garage Band on his computer, composing songs. Some are good, some are bad, and most are vaguely reminiscent of a really early version of Moby’s “Play” album, with the same sounds looped over and over and over and over again ad nauseum.
They were playing some of the songs for me this weekend when I was over, and the Oldest’s song suprised me. Unlike her father and younger sister’s songs, it was not all about the rhythm section and sounded pretty ballad like. In the beginning. And then in the middle it started to go in a distinct electronic/metal direction. I told her that the change-up was really unexpected.
And then she reminded me that she’s 14 by saying:Â “That’s because I’m emo.”
As emo as you can be if your favorite musician is Jamie Cullum, at least.

Leenie~Yeah, I seem to recall that somewhere in the middle of that long weekend there was an incident involving a van, Sloppy Meateaters, another car, and getting lost. But arrrr, it was fun, matey.

Ah, yes, power ballads. We’ve all written one (or two). There’s a couple of good apps out there for creating songs. Or you could just go in the studio. But that’s expensive. TRUST ME.

I was a total freaker when I was 14. Yep, that’s what they called the kids like me. Freakers. I don’t know what was meant by it, but we listened to hair bands/metal and dressed in grunge-y stuff.
But that phase was over once I started smoking pot.
You should totally dress her all emo before sending her home to her mother. bwaha!
My TV gig, watching footage of 20-somethings dating, has taught me all the modern lingo. I think emo is this generation’s goth, with slight differences. I often hear about hifey, but I still can’t figure out what the hell that is.
I’d suck at being emo or Goth. I’d no sooner get a good black mood on and get all dressed for it when I’d just suddenly have the urge to cross my eyes and stick out my tongue.

Vince~And yet, the child is the complete opposite of goth. She was sporting a fluorescent yellow tank top and turquoise purse the day she told me this. I chalk it up to “cool.”
E-Lo~I, too wore nothing but black band t-shirts to high school. Def Leppard (one for every day of the week and then some), Queen, Skid Row, Metallica, and of course, a WDVE t-shirt. And I wore black nailpolish on my LEFT HAND ONLY in emulation of Freddie Mercury. I might bring along my high school year books to Regan’s reception so we can drunkenly laugh at them in the parking lot afterwards.

Michael~Since this generation wouldn’t know Husker Du or Rites of Spring if they were hit upside the head with them, I tend to agree with you. And hifey just confused the hell out of me.
Serra~I could never be goth, although I still have the urge to dye electric blue streaks into my hair. But all the heavy mascara and eyeshadow? Nope.
