Party planning sucks September 21, 2006 ~ 11:20 am
Posted by Julie in : About a Julz , trackbackOkay, I’m looking for help from other NYC bloggers here. I’m trying to plan a night out for my 29th birthday (which is going to kick me in the teeth next Saturday, September 30). I had originally thought to have it at Avalon (the old Limelight). However, and this is a big however, they no longer have a guestlist. I do not want to spend my birthday standing on line to get into a club. I want to spend my birthday night in a club.
So this is where I need your help - what’s a club that has the Avalon feel? Preferably someplace that has different music in different areas, something like techno, hip hop, reggaeton, trance…that should suit the crowd of people I’m inviting fine. There needs to be a guestlist so we can get in easily, and I’d like it if there wasn’t too much of a cover - I want my friends to be able to afford this. And yes, if you’re in NYC and want to join us, you are totally invited. The more the merrier. So help a birthday girl out, wouldya?

So is this your first 29th birthday or a 29th birthday anniversary? Too bad I can’t make it, I’d love to be there.
I have no idea what club to suggest. It it was me, I’d probably hang at CBGBs.
WTF? No more guestlist at Avalon…that just sucks!
Unfortunately, I can’t help you out with an alternative as I don’t live there and have only been to Avalon (Yes, I’m still in love with that place…lol). May I, however, just say that you are lucky to live in an area where you at least have clubs worth setting foot in?
If it weren’t for all the stuff I have going on here, I would sooooo be on a plane headed that way to help you celebrate. At the very least it would only be fair since you took part in my celebration a couple years ago.
Anyway….whatever you decide may you have a birthday filled with fun!
I’m with Vince - is this 29 or 29+???? Good luck on finding the right venue … ‘course you could alway fly to Seattle … but … you’d have to wait in line here too!
Well Julie, I can’t help you out with a club in NYC, but should you ever be in Wilmington, VT on a Fri or Sat night, I would suggest the Mo’ Jazz Cafe. ‘course, you all need to be into jazz. My husband, Chris, books and plays at the club. Check it out at:
http://www.mojazzcafe.com NO COVER EVER. Many have said it more than rivals what’s going on in NYC. Really!
All~This will be my first time at being 29. Right now I am 28. Although I am calling the party “Julie’s 8th Annual 21st Birthday Party.”
Vince~According to CB’s website, there’s nothing going on on my birthday. According to Wikipedia, that’s the date they’re supposed to close the Bowery location and look for someplace else to party because of the rent battle with the landlord. But I want to go dancing, so CB’s isn’t really the place.
FD~I know, I couldn’t find a website for them and I called them today just to make sure. Sounds like the people they have working there right now are kinda clueless. Someone is supposed to get back to me about a VIP package, whatever that is. And I’m totally in love with the place, too - I started saying back in June that I wanted to have my birthday there. *sigh*
Seamus~I still resent the Seattle music scene for launching grunge on the nation. I won’t hold that against you, however.
Spider~I’m into jazz as well. Next time I’m in Wilmington, sounds like I’m going to Mo’ Jazz!
I wish I had a suggestion for a venue, Hon but I am so not a club hopping girl anymore
Darn, next year you should have your party here
Lisa~I’ve only gone clubbing about 5 times since I moved here, so I figured it would be a fun way to spend the evening. I had not counted on my first choice being a no-go.
Esther~2010, maybe.
