1 Year Plan September 29, 2006 ~ 12:28 pm

Saturday Sky
Saturday Sky in Brooklyn

I’ve been thinking about where I’d like to be at this point next year. For years I’ve been saying I want to be debt-free (not counting student loans) by the time I’m 30. Today I got to thinking about what else I’d like to accomplish in the next year of my life. Here ’tis:

- Be debt free (aside from student loans): the retroactive pay on my next paycheck should go a good way to helping me with this one.

- Put money into savings each month and not have to withdraw it.

- Be able to pay more than the minimum on my student loan payments every month.

- Learn to spin (starting out with a drop spindle, hopefully moving on to a wheel). This way I can make yarn for knitting friends as well as myself.

- Knit a sweater. For Rick. I realize I am tempting fate with the “Never Knit a Sweater For Your Boyfriend” rule, but I will arrange a pre-nup on the sweater. If we break up, I get the damned thing back.

- Do more theater gigs. I’ve been very lax about this of late, since the theater where I am Resident Dramaturg has switched to mostly daytime rehearsals (which I can’t do, because during those hours I am busy being an academic office monkey), but if I can’t get gigs there, I need to start looking around for other gigs. I need to dramaturg more.

- Write that damned book with Jordana. There will be some blog changes coming up that have to do with this, and we will be looking for your input on the book. More on this later.

- Write more short stories. My chapter story on Fanfiction.net is languishing, so I need to finish the damned thing. It’s not for lack of reviews or interest from my readers, it’s from sheer laziness on my part. Shame.

- More work on the blog. This template is nice and all, but it’s missing some things I want. I think I’m going to have to learn how to design my own blog template to be completely happy with it. Some years ago I had my own website and I learned HTML to make it, so I don’t think it will be that hard.

- Taking care of me. I’ve let doctor and dentist apppointments slide in the past few years because my insurance sucks. It will still suck, but I will have more money with the coming of the new contract, and I need to get myself taken care of. That and doing more yoga to take care of my back and neck. I don’t need to add to health woes by not taking care of what I can on my own.

There it is. If I can manage those ten things, I think 30 will be a good milestone. And this will be the last introspective post I make for a while, I promise. No more navel gazing for at least a month.

Excellent plans.

I have the perfect sweater for your boyfriend. Oh wait… I think I do, but I have to make sure it comes in adult sizes. Dangit. I’ll check. If so, I’ll email it to you. :)

I can’t wait to be the recipient of your hand-spun yarn!

2. Vince - September 29, 2006

That’s a big list of stuff. I think you should start with the last thing first. Take care of yourself and the rest will come. Then concentrate on the debt thing.

You have my sincerest good luck on knitting a sweater for Rick. Not that I don’t doubt your skills, but MAKING something for the boyfriend that he’s EXPECTED TO WEAR, that’s a heavy commitment on the part of the giver and givee. Is he wearing it just to make you happy? Does it itch and he doesn’t want to say? So many relationship killing types of stress can come of it.

3. Julie - September 29, 2006

Vince~I have run the pattern past him, I have run yarn colors past him, I will run the itchiness of the yarn past him before I knit it. And if he doesn’t wear it, I will wear it when I’m at his place.

Aimee~I have the sweater all planned out…I think it was in the Spring issue of IK. Very cool looking. And easy. The only problem is that he is so damned tall and refuses to wear anything in his actual size. He wants to wear things that are several sizes too big so they’re not “tight.” *sigh*

Argh! Men are so frustrating. Eric does the same damn thing. Fortunately, I don’t have to make stuff for him anymore… although he did say he wanted a sweater. I told him about the boyfriend curse and he just smiled–of course! Dork.

I’m going to check my pattern anyway, b/c it’s unisex and the girls might like it. :)

5. E-Lo - September 29, 2006

You’ve just inspired me to do the same thing. Although I’ll have to accomplish them by the time I’m 30.5. My list is pretty similar, with the exception of the spinning and sweater knitting. Learning HOW to knit would be a cool thing to do.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

6. LisaBinDaCity - September 30, 2006

Happy Birthday Miss Julie! I wish you a year of fun, joy, happiness, good health and all the other cool stuff :-)

Have a FAB party - I’ll be thinking of you guys!

Sounds like a productive and excellent list by the by.

7. spider - September 30, 2006

Wishing you the Best-est Birthday ever. If I was in NYC this weekend I’d come over and give you hugs ad ask if you’d like a tarot reading. Consider it done cyberly! Have a fantastic day, Ms. Julie.

8. se7en - September 30, 2006

Happy Birthday! Drink one or 2 for me, and have fun! :)

9. Michael - September 30, 2006

I heard that if you knit one of your hairs into the sweater, it counteracts the bad luck. Or if knit a sweater for a friend in CA first, it has the same effect. A light sweater with wide shoulders but not too long in the sleeves… maybe in a navy blue or dark burgundy…

10. Rebecca - September 30, 2006

Good for you! Those all sound like goals that can be achieved. You’ve come up with a plan and now all you have to do is work the plan. Not to decide is to decide and you have DECIDED! Yay!

So that is Brooklyn? No skyscrapers…..LOL

11. naomi dagen bloom - October 1, 2006

julie, we could have sung the appropriate song for your B-day as you took charge of the spinning wheel. wish we’d known…will try to get those blue toenails blogged soon. btw, Knitters without Borders raised $100 yesterday. thanks for the good input on my aspirations.
yours, naomi

12. Esther - October 1, 2006

All those should be achievable. Nothing unrealistic like “lose weight”, as in my case. Always good to have plans for the year ahead, it makes the next birthday a lot more palatable ;)

13. Pup - October 2, 2006

Sorry I’m a bit late, but

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I’ve got 1 month and 2 days to finish up my ‘To-do before 30 list”

“sigh”

Hope you had a great birthday!!

14. Julie - October 2, 2006

Pup~You can do eeeet! Thanks for coming by. :)

Esther~I group that under “taking care of me.” I am forever dealing with 5 pounds I would like to lose, especially since “skinny” jeans are back in style. However, I’m still eating crap like Doritos and candy, so obviously it’s not a huge priority. ;)

Naomi~Thank you, and thank Ron for a great birthday afternoon! I had a blast, and am glad we could help a good cause at the same time.

Rebecca~LOL, you wouldn’t believe the gyrations I had to go through to get just a sky shot. No skyscrapers in my neighborhood, but plenty of houses and an overpass to contend with, as well as many streetlights.

Michael~Amazingly, those were two of the colors Rick picked out. But you’d better go to Aimee if you want a sweater anytime soon. I might be persuaded to knit a friend in CA a hat, if he doesn’t have too many of those…

Se7~I had a couple of drinks, but I know they can’t compare with the drinks down there. When I make it down to New Orleans, I expect you to take me bar hopping!

Jenny~I knew you were my people - I actually thought “Hmmm, I should pull a rune to see what this year’s going to bring,” and then quickly got sidetracked. Tarot is a skill I haven’t yet mastered.

Lisa~I forgot to add “Meet more bloggers” to the list. Meeting up with you is on my list for some point this month, if you’re interested?

E-Lo~Come to Regan’s wedding reception and either Aimee or I will teach you how to knit. Promise.

Aimee~All patterns are good patterns. :) And Rick redeemed himself with the birthday presents he picked for me.
