Stumped December 14, 2006 ~ 4:50 pm
Posted by Julie in : The Girls , trackbackI’m stumped on what to get the Youngest this year. She’s 11, which is a little too old for kid toys, but not quite old enough for teenage stuff. She’s doubly difficult to buy for because she’s got everything a kid could want (literally). She’s athletic but also a tad girly. Books are out because I’ve bought many many many of them over the years, but I don’t know how many she actually reads. For this impossible to buy for kid, I turn to the internet for help. What would you get an 11 year old like this?

I’m kind of in the same boat as you with Maverick. He’s 10 and starting to outgrow toys.
I might suggest clothes, as most girls like new clothes. Perhaps a digital camera if you can find an affordable one (assuming she doesn’t already have one).
An Ipod shuffle?
A boyfriend?
A good attitude that has an 8 year life span - she should be comfortable with herself by then.
You know, I was on my way home and I had an “I should have had a V-8″ moment (yes, I was actually thinking about you on my drive home).
I know the PERFECT gift for her.
Wait for it….wait for it… wait for it……
A guitar of course! You can get a Squier strat fairly inexpensively. I’m sure somewhere in that metropolis that is NYC you can get a decent one for not a lot of money. Hell, they even make this:

What girl wouldn’t want one?
Maybe a scrapbook kit/photo album thing? My daughter loved that stuff. Girls that age like to “pimp” their photos and mementos.
Gift card to a record/video store? Or iTunes or one of those downloadable music thing the kids love these days? When I was 11 I was getting into heavy metal on cassette tapes, so what do I know?
Vince? A Hello Kitty Stratocaster of any kind is a sign of the Apocalypse, isn’t it?
Anyhoo, my daughter loves her tech toys a lot–she’s got an iPod and I got her a personal DVD player last year that she loves.
I’m with geewits, something along the photo/scrapbook line or beads. Beads always makes a good gift, well, I guess if you’re a beader. An art kit?
I would suggest either something in the artsy/craftsy vein ( my eldest was into that sort of thing at that age) or music- ie- cd player ( if an I-pod is not around/affordable) and some cds( or a gift card to I-tunes if appropriate!)
Push coming to absolute shove- a gift card to a store she really likes, then go with her to pick out the gifts herself. Just the two of you. A “girls day out” sort of thing. Not only does she get the gifts she wants- but something to look forward to. A sort-of 2nd present!
Problem solved. I bought her an Ugly Doll. It’s kind of kid-like, but also with a teenager edge.
Everything you guys suggested (with the exception of the Hello Kitty strat, which was, as Serra said a sign of the apocalypse) was excellent. Unfortunately said child already has an iPod (and an iTunes certificate was out, because this is the child who f’ed up her computer with viruses by downloading things, although I seriously thought about it.) I’ve given her a lot of crafty stuff over the years (including scrapbooks and knitting and dear god, the thought of this child with little bitty beads scares me), and I want to put a hold on that for a bit. I’ve also given her gift certificates for the past two occasions requiring presents and wanted to get her something a little more personal. As I said, the child is impossible to buy for. But THANK YOU ALL for racking your brains for me.
(Extra big thanks to ESC, who came up with the Ugly Doll concept.)
what the hell is an ugly doll?
Ugly dolls rock! My boys wanted one!
The Hello Kitty strat is so freaking tacky that it ventures into the cool. And of course it’s a sign of the Apocalypse. Doesn’t everyone know Hello Kitty is actually totally evil?
