Telenovela junkie January 22, 2007 ~ 11:28 pm
Posted by Julie in : Reviews , trackbackHave I mentioned before that Ugly Betty is one of my favorite shows and that I’ve got it on Season Pass on the TiVo? No? Well, I do. I also have a couple of episodes on the iPod for subway/lunch hour viewing. It makes me happy.
One of the things I love best about the show is that it has definitely stayed true to its telenovela roots. (Yes, I have been known to watch telenovelas on Univision, Galavision, Telemundo, and whatever other channels air them, even though the amount of Spanish I have retained from high school is limited to “Que tal?”, “Hola,” and a wide variety of curses.) Just when you think you’ve got everything figured out, the writers throw in a twist so incredibly bizarre that you sit in front of the TV slack-jawed, thinking “What the fuck just happened?” and you rewind the TiVo at least twice to try to wrap your mind around it.
Tonight I finally got around to watching last Thursday’s episode. If you saw it, you know precisely which five minutes I rewound multiple times. If you didn’t, and don’t normally watch this show, it’s about time you start. It’s just getting GOOD, people.

I’m totally lost. Email me and tell me!
I know it’s supposed to be good, but it never fit into our schedule. Maybe we can catch the Summer reruns. But seriously, you haven’t been watching Heroes? It’s awesome!
TV? Who has time for TV? I taped Battlestar Galactica Sunday (one of the two shows that are must watches for me) and I haven’t got around to watching yet. I’m hoping to find time on Friday.
Have you seen Betty in real life? I couldn’t believe the amount of makeup they put on that woman. She’s really cute.
I love Ugly Betty! And that twist was freakin’ awesome - LOVED it.
Lisa~That was the LAST thing I expected! So awesome and melodramatic. And I loved the bonding between Daniel and Betty in this episode. I downloaded it on iTunes this morning because I loved it so much.
Vince~America Ferrara is beautiful in real life. I want to know how long it takes to apply the braces every time. (And not having time for TV is why God invented TiVo. So you can watch TV on YOUR schedule.)
Geewits~Haven’t really been interested. But Chris Eccleston could get me interested in the phone book, so there it is. From what I saw of it last night, it’s a pretty good show.
Scout~Will do.
Never seen it all the way through–just the last few minutes as I’m waiting for the next show to come on. It looks good though…
Gotta start watching it….loved her speech on the Globes.
Lori~You NEED to watch this. You will LOVE it. Not even kidding.
Aimee~You also need to start watching this show. And for the most part, kids can watch it, too.
I’ve never watched this show. I guess when it was first being pimped for the new season, it just didn’t hit me as something I would like. Maybe I shall have to give it a try though since it would seem you and I tend to like a lot of the same show when it comes to the small screen pickings.
As for the braces….According to a report I saw on Inside Edition about the makeup done on Ugly Betty, they only take a matter of seconds to pop on. I guess what they do is they make one of those Invisalign type trays to fit the actor’s teeth and then affix the little metal brackets to the plastic - easy in, easy out.
Ohhhh my god. One of my absolute FAVORITES of this season. That and Friday Night Lights.
Yes, last week was just OMGWTFBBQ!!!*&
OH I love that show too, although sometimes it’s painful to watch. I think she’s quite the actress. I liked her role in the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants as well.
Rebekah~I had never seen her before Ugly Betty. The Oldest had to fill me in on Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. But I think she’s fantastic.
Traci~I have to start watching Friday Night Lights, I’ve been hearing good things about it.
FD~Invisalign braces are the one thing I would have never thought of. Pretty cool. I think you’d probably like the show, but then again, I think everyone would, and Rick doesn’t. So I’ve already been proven wrong.
you are SO right - it is a fun, almost wonderland kind of show - it’s just a little TOO colorful (in a good way), so that accentuates the telenovela similarity!! Also, America is wonderful and it is nice to see her success!
P.S.
Julie, I am doing a show this coming Monday at The Zipper Factory in Manhattan (www.zippertheater.com) - it’s at 8PM - I hope you can come… I was Lucy Brown in The Threepenny Opera
