New skin!!! March 22, 2004 ~ 4:56 pm

I took Mark Senff’s admonition to heart and got rid of my Blogger template. I found this one cruising around blogskins.com, and I think it’s pretty good for now. Not exactly what I want, and I’m not crazy about how you can still see a third of the google ad, but whatever. I don’t want to deal with anymore html at the moment.

Spent the weekend alternating between rehearsals and watching basketball on tv with Rick. We’ve been together for a year an a half, and he still hopes I will become as enamored with every sport as he is. I try, really. And sometimes, I even get excited watching March Madness (like when Pitt went onto the Sweet 16!!). But it’s not as great as watching football or hockey. I keep coming out with things like “Hey, if that player went out of bounds and took out that row of cheerleaders with a body check, that would be cool!” Hmmm…guess I should stick to the more violent sports. But he did successfully teach me how to read box scores yesterday, a real feat for both of us.

Tonight, going home long enough to pick up the laundry and go to the landromat. Joe (one of my cats, named after Joe Elliott, of course) decided to get rid of a hairball on top of the sheet protecting my armchair last night at 1 am. So now I have to hope that the Shout I put on the mess will keep the stain from setting in. I love my life…

Apprentice March 18, 2004 ~ 9:53 pm

The Apprentice is a recap tonight…damn. I wanted to see someone get fired. Like maybe Katrina. So, anyway, I’m at my friend Lori’s house, drinking Smirnoff twisted. And sooner or later we’ll end up reading her play. And that’s my night.

I was gonna post for St. Patrick’s day, but the boss kept me busy all day, and then I went to a party at the theatre. We’re doing an Irish play, so they figured have an Irish party. And then to the boyfriend’s house. Thank God for Lori, who lent me a shirt to wear for work. Note to Rick: “Honey, when you want me to come over, tell me before I leave the house so I can pack, or let me leave clothes there…”

And now, we have just seen the most disturbing TV show of all time. Extreme makeover. Before and after pictures like you never wanted to see. Yikes. Okay, off to read the play!

Nelson??? March 11, 2004 ~ 10:46 am

Okay, listening to the radio, I just heard that Styx is coming to the Beacon in NYC. That doesn’t really do anything for me, but hey, good for them. And then the radio ad said that the supporting act is going to be Nelson. Remember Nelson? Matthew and Gunnar, Ricky Nelson’s kids? They had, what, like three hits in the early 90s, and then dropped off the face of the earth? Now don’t get me wrong, I did like them at the time, but I was *11*. So are they making a comeback, or was Styx just really desperate?

Poker Night! March 5, 2004 ~ 10:08 am

Okay, so I’m playing poker tonight for the first time. Well, the first time since I was about 6. One of my uncles thought it was funny to teach the 6 year old to gamble. I haven’t played since. So tonight, 20 years later, I will undoubtedly lose my shirt. Or at least the $15 in nickels, dimes, and quarters that I’m bringing. The boyfriend and the best friend say that they’ll be there to help me out, but as one of the boyfriend’s comments on the phone last night (before I invited him to play tonight) was “The best part of poker is when you can just fuck with someone’s head,” I’m holding out little hope.

Tomorrow and Sunday, rehearsal. Which means much singing, some stage combat, and fun with Moliere. The director called me last night to thank me again for my contributions Tuesday night. Keep in mind all I did was sing along with the actors, but I guess people aren’t used to that level of dramaturg participation. It’s nice to be appreciated, though. :)

And after not having it since I was in college, my mom has just rediscovered the internet. She bought a new computer and called me yesterday to get my email address. Maybe this will cut down on her daily phone calls to me? Probably not, she’s a mom.

Sting at the Beacon March 4, 2004 ~ 4:34 pm

As it turns out, boyfriend called about 5 minutes after I posted yesterday, so we went out for dinner and margaritas (we’re both sick of Mexican food, but the margaritas keep drawing us back) before I went over to the show.

And the show? I liked it. I danced. Sting’s music is mellow, but has an unbelievable vibe to it. Nice fusion of rock, jazz, reggae, dance, etc. The opening act wasn’t so exciting, even though he’s a great trumpet player, but Sting defintely rocked the house. Favorite moments include the entire place cheering during “If I Ever Lose My Faith,” on the lines about politicians all seeming like game show hosts and “never seen a military solution that didn’t always end up as something worse.” He’s right on, that Gordon Sumner. Not electrifying like a Def Leppard concert, but definitely right on.

And the 10 minute version of “Roxanne” was pretty kick-ass.

What I Do March 3, 2004 ~ 3:29 pm

Have I mentioned what my day job entails? No? Well, today I’m evaluating the transcripts of graduate students to make sure that they’ve met all the requirements for their respective degrees. So I’m sitting at my desk, going through transcripts with an “audit sheet” and making little check marks beside the courses they’ve taken. Fun, right? I’ve done 35 of the freakin’ things and it’s only 3:30. I may just go mad before the end of the day.

Oh, but Sting’s playing at the Beacon Theatre tonight, and I will be there. Despite the fact that none of my friends want to come with me. Especially the boyfriend, who refers to Sting as “Stink,” and will possibly be sitting in his apartment *across the street* from the Beacon. Either that, or he’ll have driven to Massachusetts. He hasn’t called me to know which he’s decided on yet. It’s times like this that you realize be they age 14 or 49, men do not change.
