Come back from my weekend in nature to find out that many things have been going on in the blogoverse. Probably the most exciting one is that the Sarcastic Journalist has been blogging through her labor. Looks like Ellie’s going to be here today, since the last post pre-pushing was at 7 this morning. So, yay for SJ and her husband, and Happy Birthday, Ellie! :) And SJ is now officially my hero. Anyone who can blog through labor is awesome.

The weekend was great. Rick and I had Friday night and Saturday morning to ourselves to hang out and get ready, and I did get him Bad Santa for part of the birthday present. I don’t know if he liked it as much as I did, but we got a bang out of it. Saturday afternoon we headed up to the cabin, got settled in, and went swimming for a while. While all of the cabins are pretty “rustic” (no heating or cooling, despite having electricity and a fridge and hot plate), ours had an amazing view of the lake. We made chicken on the grill, made s’mores over a fire (the younger girlchild managed to get a marshmallow burn on her forehead - don’t ask, but she’s fine), and when they went to bed Rick and I went down to the lake to look at the stars and found a whole bunch of baby catfish, which was pretty cool. Played with the fire a bunch, too.

And then yesterday we hung out at the lake feeding fish, and the older one and I read while Rick and the younger one played basketball and horseshoes. The young one managed to stub her toe on a rock, and then spent the rest of the day telling us about it. “My toe hurts” “I think it’s trying to decide if the nail wants to fall off or not.” “I stubbed it twice earlier” “It doesn’t hurt too much now, but it still hurts a little bit.” By the end of the day, I wanted to amputate the toe to prevent further status reports. When she’s sick, she has a tendency to play it up. She doesn’t cry, but she wants to make sure you remember that she’s hurt. I now realize why my mother got so angry with me when I was a kid (her nickname for me when I was sick was “Sarah Bernhart”). Sorry mom.

Rick and the girls are going back up to the cabin today after his softball game, and will be there till Thursday. I’m jealous. I will be in Brooklyn. Although tonight I’m going to a play reading. And Friday I’m going to my artistic director’s country house in the Berkshires for our annual “Playwright’s Retreat”. Swimming, hiking, and reading a bunch of plays…I can’t wait. :)
