Take that, College July 15, 2004 ~ 3:16 pm

I’m leaving an hour early today. Screw it. I’m tired of working, I don’t feel wonderful, and Rick and the kids are in town for a very short window of time tonight before they go back up to camp. They’ll be coming back Saturday, but I will be in the Berkshires till Sunday night, with a reading to go to Monday night, so there you have it. I be skipping out.

Not much going on here otherwise. But I do want to wish Kim a Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday, Anonymous…ahem, I mean, Kim. ;) Hope it’s a good one. :)

I think I’m getting a sore throat. And I’m definitely PMSing - my period will be here tomorrow. Gotta love birth control pills. They regulate me so well that I can even tell you the hour I will be starting my period tomorrow. Usually happens around 10:30. Science is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

My friend Kim (how is it I know so many people named Kim now?) started blogging, so I’ve added her blog to the ever expanding blogroll. Her blog is “Procrastinations of a Tired Grad Student”, and her viewpoint is just as twisted as mine. :)
Other than that, a totally un-PC thought just crossed my mind. Get out your lynching equipment now, this is a doozy. Why is it that I have to call black people “African Americans” now, when the “PC” term for a white person is “Caucasian”, which actually means “white-skinned”, it just sounds more refined? I want to be called “European American” if I have to start calling people by their location of origin. Or at the very least call me “Anglo”. I know I’m completely out of line here, but someone’s got to agree with me, right? Right?

My ear. And other things. July 13, 2004 ~ 12:54 pm

I figured I would update you on the status of my ear. In case you were wondering.

It’s fine. I did the Murine drops one more time at Rick’s, and that mostly took care of it, but swimming in the lake definitely cleared it all out. I’m trying not to think of earwax-eating algae, but I think that’s what it must have been. As long as the algae settled for the earwax, I guess we’re okay.

Raining here for the second day in a row. And we haven’t even hit 70 degrees yet. Actually, that part’s fine by me. It’s just the nastiness of constant drizzle that I disagree with. I’m hoping it clears up so I can do laundry tonight. I ain’t dragging my hamper six blocks through the rain to the laundromat. Nuh-uh, nothing doing.

Let’s see, what else? I just ate a piece of 7up cake. I’m not sure what the 7up substituted in for, but it was nice and lemony and refreshing.

Oh, and my friend Tony sold his house. His family is definitely moving to Oregon in a month. It’s good for them, especially for his kids who be able to go to a better school, but it’s sad for my friend Jordana and I. Now it’s just the two of us out of our grad school gang. Pleh.

Okay, lunchtime. Off to play gameboy and read. And see if I can get the security guard to yell at me for sitting in the window again. I ask you, if the window is closed and I am sitting on a radiator cover that is wide enough for my butt with room to spare (instead of being precariously perched), what is the harm of me sitting there? I think he’s just looking for something to liven up his day.

Ellie Caralyn has arrived, y’all. Check out SJ’s blog to see pictures of the little one and get all the stats. Congrats to the proud mommy and daddy again!

Come back from my weekend in nature to find out that many things have been going on in the blogoverse. Probably the most exciting one is that the Sarcastic Journalist has been blogging through her labor. Looks like Ellie’s going to be here today, since the last post pre-pushing was at 7 this morning. So, yay for SJ and her husband, and Happy Birthday, Ellie! :) And SJ is now officially my hero. Anyone who can blog through labor is awesome.

The weekend was great. Rick and I had Friday night and Saturday morning to ourselves to hang out and get ready, and I did get him Bad Santa for part of the birthday present. I don’t know if he liked it as much as I did, but we got a bang out of it. Saturday afternoon we headed up to the cabin, got settled in, and went swimming for a while. While all of the cabins are pretty “rustic” (no heating or cooling, despite having electricity and a fridge and hot plate), ours had an amazing view of the lake. We made chicken on the grill, made s’mores over a fire (the younger girlchild managed to get a marshmallow burn on her forehead - don’t ask, but she’s fine), and when they went to bed Rick and I went down to the lake to look at the stars and found a whole bunch of baby catfish, which was pretty cool. Played with the fire a bunch, too.

And then yesterday we hung out at the lake feeding fish, and the older one and I read while Rick and the younger one played basketball and horseshoes. The young one managed to stub her toe on a rock, and then spent the rest of the day telling us about it. “My toe hurts” “I think it’s trying to decide if the nail wants to fall off or not.” “I stubbed it twice earlier” “It doesn’t hurt too much now, but it still hurts a little bit.” By the end of the day, I wanted to amputate the toe to prevent further status reports. When she’s sick, she has a tendency to play it up. She doesn’t cry, but she wants to make sure you remember that she’s hurt. I now realize why my mother got so angry with me when I was a kid (her nickname for me when I was sick was “Sarah Bernhart”). Sorry mom.

Rick and the girls are going back up to the cabin today after his softball game, and will be there till Thursday. I’m jealous. I will be in Brooklyn. Although tonight I’m going to a play reading. And Friday I’m going to my artistic director’s country house in the Berkshires for our annual “Playwright’s Retreat”. Swimming, hiking, and reading a bunch of plays…I can’t wait. :)

Off My Ass July 9, 2004 ~ 4:23 pm

Finally got off my ass and added two links to the “Fun Links” section: The SOL Forum, and NYwiki. Most of you know what the SOL Forum is, so I’m not going to explain that, but the NYwiki is something cool. It’s basically an encyclopedia of NYC as compiled by New Yorkers. It’s growing every minute as more people contribute, and the goal is that someday it’s going to have every single story of every single building, person, and event in NYC. That’s a tall order, but it will be fun reading and contributing to along the way.

Let’s see, what else. New blogs on the Blogroll. Several of them are NYC blogs, a couple just caught my eye on other people’s blogs. And so the blogoverse expands (or would that be contracts?) some more.

Oh, and spent 45 minutes this afternoon tweaking Lori’s blog, which is already listed on the Blogroll. She’s claiming that she’s going to write more in it, but at the moment she’s finishing writing a play for the playwright’s retreat we’re going to next weekend, so I’ll cut her some slack this week.

Last but not least, just got off the phone with Rick. The ex is back in town tonight, so the kids are going over there for the evening, meaning that Rick and I get to have margaritas at our favorite Mexican place. I have to stop on the way up and get his present, which is going to be the sleeping pad he’s been coveting for camping. And maybe the Bad Santa DVD for us to watch tonight.

And then the weekend! We’re going camping this weekend upstate. Rick rented a cabin in the Adirondacks (we figured break the kids into camping slowly…first a cabin, then the tent), and we’ll be there from tomorrow morning till Sunday afternoon. Then we’ll come back so he can play softball Monday morning and I can work, and he and the girls will go back up for the rest of the week. Wish I could be with them, but alone time isn’t a bad thing, either.

Alright, I’m blowing this popsicle stand. I’ll talk to you all later.

Happy Early Birthday July 9, 2004 ~ 11:21 am

I won’t be blogging this weekend, so I wanted to shoot out a Happy Birthday to the love of my life, Rick, who turns 50 on Sunday. As my online birthday present to him, I will say that he really knows how to use his ________ (blank left because his kids sometimes read this). He told me last night that if I was going to blog about him, I should at least say good things about him. The previous sentence was his idea of one of those “good things”.

So there you go, Baby. Happy birthday. :)

Election Day Scare tactics July 9, 2004 ~ 11:13 am

Read in AMNewYork this morning that Homeland Security is expecting terrorist attacks on Election Day. Bunch of bullshit, IMNSHO. You can’t give me details, but you expect me to cower in fear on Election Day, which would conveniently keep me out of the voting booth. Don’t think so. If the bombing comes and they have to pry the voting booth handle out of my charred, dead hand, at least I will go to my grave with a clear conscience.

Well, feh. July 9, 2004 ~ 9:51 am

Two things going on this morning that are irritating me.

First, I woke up not being able to hear out of my left ear. Guess I have excessive ear wax in that ear or something. I know, I know, ewww. I do clean my ears, really. But I had a doctor tell me a few years ago that my ears just seem to produce a lot of earwax. Just one of those things, I guess. So I can’t hear out of that ear, which unfortunately is the ear that’s “to the world” as it were - that’s the side of me facing the rest of the office. So here I am, basically deaf. Fun. I even put the Murine ear wax cleaner crap in my ear this morning, and while it seemed to work for a few seconds, we are back in the original situation now. Hopefully this will stop by the end of the day. By noon would be even nicer.

Second, Blogrolling is apparently down, which means I can’t access anyone else’s blogs right now. Kind of akin to having everyone on your cell phone’s phone book and then the stupid thing breaking. How will I survive? How will I keep myself entertained today? I might actually have to work!

Argh. Hope the irritations end soon. Otherwise I could be a very grumpy little Julie soon.

UPDATE: Woohoo, Blogrolling is back! Now if only my ear would resolve itself so speedily.

The airconditioner is here. It weighs 68 pounds. I had to wrangle it out of its box, wrestle it down the stairs, set it up, and then heft it up onto a table so the exhaust hose would have a straight path to the window, but it’s up and running. Yay, airconditioner. I wouldn’t say I’m exactly chilly, even with it running full blast, but then again, I’m in an open floor plan apartment. It’s got a lot of space to fill. If I want to be frigid, I can stick a sheet across the doorway between the living room and kitchen. Right now I’m happy just being cool. Cos it hit 90 degrees out today. Pleh.

Next tasks, in no particular order: grocery store for kitty litter and sundries, vacuum house, and take shower. I smell. But I will probably smell if I go out to get groceries, even if I take a shower, so maybe that should come last. Decisions, decisions.
