Fun with cats August 2, 2004 ~ 10:45 pm
Posted by Julie in : Daily Grind , comments closedI have two cats that constantly demand attention. They have various means of doing this. Oreo stealing, yowling, beating the shit out of each other on my furniture…but their preferred means of getting me to pay attention to them is to sit on me. Doesn’t matter where I am, they want to be on me. Especially when I’m at the computer. Don’t believe me? Here’s the view from my seat:
Joe on my lap:

Jesse investigating a mouse and trying to look smarter than he is:

So I get my revenge when I can. Dressing Joe up and taking his picture took up a good 10 minutes last weekend. If cats can look pissed and embarassed at the same time, here’s proof:

Don’t worry, he’s fine. He ignored me for approximately 30 seconds after I removed the baby onesie, and then came back to yowl his indignation at me. And get petted. Because after he’d been traumatized, he needed comforting, and I was the only one in the house with hands.

Al Qaeda wants to bomb Newark. Oh, I believe that one. Have you seen Newark lately? It already looks like it’s been through a nuclear war. No terrorists want to bomb Newark, ladies and gents. It would be a gigantic real-life oxymoron.
Just the latest round of Governmental Fear Factor.
Itchy Pants August 2, 2004 ~ 3:08 pm
Posted by Julie in : Daily Grind , comments closedMy legs are smeared with cortizone-10 and benadryl anti-itch spray, and the bites have gone down, but they’re still itchy. I just snuck in a few surreptitious spread-finger scratches (you know, where you spread two fingers out and scratch around the bite, rather than over it). That feels better.
And for no apparent reason, the blog appears to be loading in a timely manner again. That’s nice.
I’ve noticed on a couple of my “idol blogs” (those who know way more about Java, HTML, and beatiful blog-formatting than I ever will) that they use Movable Type. Anyone tried it and know what the benefits/downsides are? Can you use it with Blogger? Should I even worry about it? Comments?
Political Commentary August 2, 2004 ~ 12:18 pm
Posted by Julie in : Daily Grind , comments closedOkay, before I get into this, first a little piece of political humor that makes fun of both sides. Go see JibJab’s new film, “This Land”. You’ll laugh till you cry, and it doesn’t matter which side of the political fence you’re on. My entire office just gathered around my computer to watch it, and you’ve never heard such laughter.
Now, my political post. I didn’t watch a lot of the DNC last week. I caught highlights here and there. I saw Obama’s speech, and was very impressed. He’s intelligent and charismatic, and from what I saw, I would love it if he turned out to be our first black President, as so many think will happen. I heard bits and pieces of Al Sharpton’s speech, and all I have to say is “Good for you, Al.” The media “commentators” that thought blacks would be offended by his message missed the boat entirely. I saw the whole Thursday night Kerry-extravaganza, and while I had problems with some of it (come on, John, who told you “John Kerry reporting for duty” wasn’t cheesy? They were wrong.), and am still wondering where he’s going to get the 40,000 troops he wants to add to the armed forces, overall I was left hopeful. This is a man to be listened to.
I know that John Kerry has money. But so far from what I’m seeing, he’s not interested in cutting rich folks tax breaks while the rest of us are hung out to dry. He wants to take on healthcare, an issue that’s been sadly treated during this administration. Well, John, my skyrocketing copays, completely shitty dental plan and I thank you. He wants to give money to education: it’s about time! No Child Left Behind is bullshit. New York Public schools are going downhill from lack of funding. I know, I have friends who are teachers. And it can’t be just NYC schools. These were just some of the issues he addressed that spoke to me. Even with the big taglines (”America can do better” and “Help is on the way”) increasing the cheese factor, I felt like I was coming to the light at the end of the tunnel. I was hopeful and inspired. I’m actually looking forward to November.
And I loved Alex Kerry’s speech about Licorice the Unlucky Hamster. Anything that woman has to say, I want to hear. I especially loved “the hamster was never quite right after that, but he lived.”
Questions August 2, 2004 ~ 10:13 am
Posted by Julie in : Daily Grind , comments closedWhy is my blog taking forever to display lately? It comes up eventually, but it takes a while. And I haven’t done anything different that would cause it to do this. Why, Blogger, why?
Also, where are our Weather Pixies? Why have they disappeared? Are they on strike?
And why did someone turn the toaster up in my office, turning my PopTart into a charred, carmelized sugard mess? I’m eating it, because parts of it are salvageable, but I am not happy. And I’m having to drink lots of water to choke it down. *cough, wretch* Wait, I’ve hit the edge of salvageable and staggered into “burnt strawberry goo”. No more PopTart!
It’s 10 AM, and it’s already 80 degrees out with 80% humidity. I thought I felt a cool breeze as I stepped out of my house this morning, but then I realized it was just wind stirred up by the cars rushing by on the BQE. Thank God for airconditioning!
It’s my boss’s first day of a two week vacation. Which means that I’m in charge. Tremble in terror, office mates. Shudder in fear. It’s going to be a long two weeks.
